Playtests are helpful in every game design phase, but most of the time you want to get very specific feedback as a game designer. This form of desired feedback can be different in each design phase of course. In the beginning, you may want to look for the elements of the game that are most fun or frustrating for the players. Towards the end of the development phase, it might be just about adjusting values on individual cards. That’s why it’s extremely important to guide the players’ feedback and not just let them talk. Otherwise, the feedback can quickly develop in a different direction than what you as a game designer would like. That’s why today I want to introduce some of the best questions you can ask your testers.
But before we get started I wanted to do a little advertising. A few weeks ago I started a survey and asked many game designers what their biggest challenges were. First place was finding Playtesters and doing playtests. Especially in times of Corona where many local groups don’t meet, it seems to be more difficult for many game designers to test their games and get the feedback they need. I would like to help you with this. Therefore I would like to initiate 2 things for you.
- Organize a new wave of mastermind groups
- Organize monthly playtest event
